The Avengers did not disappoint!!! There’s already a million reviews out there, and I don’t have the time to add a very detailed one to the growing collection, but since I’m still buzzing with adrenaline from my first – oh yes, there will be many – viewing of The Avengers, I just had to share my initial thoughts. And I’ll stay spoiler free.
Joss’s writing is evident in the film’s arch, in the movement, and in the biting one-liners. He has taken this ensemble cast and created a masterpiece of heroism, action, and storytelling. All his usual tropes are here: strong women, chosen family, pop-culture references (okay, one small spoiler: Iron Man calling Hawk Eye “Legolas” had me slapping my knee!!) and more. All the reasons you love Buffy, Angel and Firefly are here. And tied in with all the reasons you love Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and The Hulk.
One of the highlights for the film for me was Black Widow. She absolutely kicked ass, held her own, and had me wishing I could be her just as powerfully I wished I was Buffy when I was 16 and Whedon first won me over.
This is THE film Whedonists and Marvel fans have been waiting for.
