I had to look up a handful of words as I did my readings this week on Carl Jung. Here’s my list of fun new vocab!

Enantiodromia: the superabundance of any force inevitably produces its opposite. It is equivalent to the principle of equilibrium in the natural world, in that any extreme is opposed by the system in order to restore balance.

Apodictic: necessarily true or logically certain.

Antinomian: a person who maintains that Christians are freed from the moral law by virtue of grace as set forth in the gospel.

Hubris: excessive pride or self-confidence.

Autochthonous: of or pertaining to ideas that arise independently of the individual’s won train of thought and seem instead to have some alien or external agency as their source.

Eidolons: an ideal.

Chthonic: of or pertaining to the deities, spirits, and other beings dwelling under the earth.

Apocatastasis: restitution; the doctrine that Satan and all sinners will ultimately be restored in God.

Hegelian Dialectic: an interpretive method, originally used to relate specific entities or events to the absolute idea, in which some assertible proposition (thesis) is necessarily opposed by an equally assertible and apparently contradictory proposition (antithesis), the mutual contradiction being reconciled on a higher level of truth by a third proposition (synthesis).

Nadir: the point on the celestial sphere directly beneath a given position or observer and diametrically opposite the zenith.
